Systems
Standard systems of a wet section for a hydrochloric
acid (HCl)
pickling line are:
Acid System
The acid system consists of acid-resistant equipment to store, recirculate,
heat, feed and transfer acid, and pickling solutions. It is designed
to process coils with a minimum temperature of 32°F. The system
is designed to provide a “turbulent” acid bath in the pickling tanks
using Nelson Steel’s patented Turbo-Tunnel® system. Nelson Steel’s
patented Turbo-Tunnel® is the most efficient turbulent pickling
system available. The Turbo-Tunnel® creates a high amount of turbulence
around the strip and is highest at the strip edges where mill scale
is the heaviest. The Turbo-Tunnel® system eliminates air space above
the acid bath, thus reducing evaporation, heat loss and acid consumption.
Rinse System
The rinse system is used to remove carryover acid from the strip before
it leaves the pickling line. This unique patented Stain-Free® rinse
system allows the horizontal strip to remain completely submerged from
roll bite to roll bite in all stages. (Optional 4 or 5 stage systems)
Advantages:
- Eliminates staining from oxidation
- Eliminates high maintenance spray headers
- Allows line stops in excess of 6 minutes without rejectable staining
Fume Exhaust System
The fume exhaust system will collect, scrub and vent fumes and vapors
from the pickling tanks, rinse tanks, storage tanks, and recirculating
tanks. Basic components of this system are the scrubber, fan, ductwork,
controls and stack with demister.
Nelson Steel’s fume exhaust system is designed to comply with our corporate
environmental policy and to meet or exceed all applicable environmental
laws and regulations. Our adherence to this environmental principal
will help our customers to sustain the viability of their business,
and will help to provide further value to their employees, customers
and communities.
The fume system is designed to exceed all governing environmental regulations
for efficiency, outlet concentrations of hydrochloric acid (HCl) and
indoor air quality.
The fume system comes with testing and inspection sample ports to monitor
emissions.
Optional systems provided by Nelson Steel:
Pre-Wash System
The pre-wash system is used to remove oil and other coatings from the
strip prior to entering the pickling tanks, and also to wash acid from
the strip during a line reversal. This system can be installed as a
single or double tank system.
Oil Separation & Alkali Recovery System
This system is provided to remove free oil and emulsified oil from the
recirculation systems of the wash tank, and return the clean water with
alkali back to the wash tank.
Water Treatment, including Effluent Free Systems
This system will condition the waste rinse water for disposal to a municipal
sewage treatment plant by neutralization and precipitation of suspended
solids. Design and integration of waste rinse water treatment includes
clarification systems as well as complete water recycling. All water
treatment systems incorporate the latest technology to ensure compliance
with local regulation for effluent quality.
Packaged Boilers
This item is a complete steam generating system. It will supply sufficient
steam for heating acid and water for all systems in the pickling line
at a line speed of 400 ft./min.
Feed Water Systems
This tank receives water from the softeners, chemicals from the chemical
feed system and preheat it before pumping into the boilers.
Condensate Systems
This system is used to collect all condensate from the heat exchangers
and re-use it to feed the boiler feedwater tank.
Dry-Lube Coating Systems
This system consists of the necessary tanks, pumping units, and controls,
etc., to provide the coating unit with three different types of dry
lubricant solutions.
Structural Steel
This item consists of structural beams columns, walkways, handrails,
stairs, etc., and includes approximately 50 tons of structural steel.
Stack Tower
The stack tower is used to support the FRP fume exhaust stack. The tower
is 60’ high and ties back to the building steelwork. The tower comes
complete with a caged access ladder and inspection platforms at two
different elevations. The platforms allow access to the droplet eliminator
and sample ports which are located on the stack.
Spill Line
The purpose of the spill line is to redirect any liquid that has gathered
in the chemical pit sump to any one of the following tanks: #4 acid
recirculation tank, spent acid transfer tank, raw acid tank, of the
equalization tank. Location options for spill redirection are provided
in order to be able to transfer the spill to the most suitable location.
Acid Proofing
Materials have resistance to concentrated hydrochloric acid (HCl) and
50% caustic. This item includes all the necessary acid proofing materials
and installation.
Total square footage allowed for in this specification is 15,000 ft².
After approval of foundation drawings by the customer, this total area
will be recalculated and a credit or an extra will be submitted by Nelson
Steel. Other acid proof lining systems are available based on customer
preference.
Start Up & Commissioning & Training
Field services for start up & commissioning and training are for
60 days total comprised of a 6-day workweek, layover days, and travel
days to and from site. Days are based on 8 hours on site.
“Turbo-Tunnel” Design
Consists of the re-design of the fume dusting, granite liners, granite
covers, and FRP pickling tank covers for the entire length of the pickling
section.
Spray Rinse
A spray rinse system can be installed which has an added savings in
water consumtion.
